Residents Evacuated As Storms Cause Flash Flooding in Victoria

December 19, 2011 – VICTORIA:
SES spokesman Lachlan Quick said around 300 calls were made between Sunday morning and Monday morning, most related to building damage and flash flooding. In one of the heaviest dumps, residents of Stawell in the state’s west had be be evacuated from their homes after 74mm of rain fell late yesterday afternoon. The State Emergency Service received about 70 calls for help from people in the area after 62mm of rain fell in two hours. Anecdotal reports included parked cars being lifted by flood waters. Earlier, Mildura residents made about 90 calls to the SES after the north-western area received a dumping of about 60mm of rain as a thunderstorm passed through between 7am-8am.

Overall, Victorians made about 300 calls to the SES between 6am Sunday and 6am today. SES spokesman Lachlan Quick said most calls related to building damage and flash flooding as roof guttering systems and stormwater drains were unable to cope with the deluge.

”There was so much rain it was backing up into people’s ceilings,” Mr Quick said.
